Happy Black Country Day

Happy Black Country Day

As a firm with a proud Black Country heritage, Higgs & Sons is pleased to be joining in the celebrations for today's Black Country Day.

In 2015 Higgs issued its 140th anniversary Yearbook which both celebrated its proud heritage and looked forward to a bright future as it continued to meet the needs of clients within the Black Country and far beyond.

To mark Black Country Day, we have included an excerpt from our anniversary Yearbook which highlighted the beginnings of the firm, a firm which went on to become an institution in this proud, remarkable region.

Happy Black Country Day from Higgs & Sons.

From Humble Beginnings...

Joseph Higgs, having been articled to Thomas Homer of Brierley Hill five years earlier, was admitted as a solicitor in this year, 1875.

Whilst the name Higgs & Son did not appear for another 23 years when the first of Joseph’s sons joined his father’s practice, this marked the beginning of a business that has established itself as one of the region’s leading law firms, one that has worked hard to remain loyal to its roots whilst embracing a forward thinking, innovative philosophy.

Ironically, the young solicitor was prevented from practising in Brierley Hill - the town that was to become synonymous with the firm for the next 14 decades - due in part to a condition of his articles. So the firm traces its first home to Bennett’s Hill Birmingham, and has maintained strong links with the city ever since. It was in 1882, after establishing a name for himself in Birmingham, that Joseph moved the fledgling Higgs business to its first office in Brierley Hill, a location to which the firm has remained loyal ever since.

Higgs & Sons is still benefiting from the experience of the Higgs family. David Higgs, the great grandson of founder Joseph remains a consultant at the firm and the core values that Joseph instilled remain the bedrock of the growing, progressive law firm that serves the region and its various communities to this day.
