Key appointment enhances Higgs' specialist offerings

The appointment of a specialist construction Partner is set to further enhance the Property team at Higgs & Sons as well as strengthening the contentious offering at the firm.

Rachael Hobbis joins as a Partner after 10 years with national law firm Shakespeare Martineau. As an expert in construction law, Rachael has extensive experience of a wide range of construction projects including residential and commercial development, healthcare, education, leisure, retail and infrastructure projects.

Rachael can assist the client team at various stages of a project; from advising upon the procurement of a project including the form of build contract, consultants’ appointments and collateral warranties or working alongside the professional team during the delivery of the project or providing support and advice when issues arise on site.

Rachael is also experienced in acting for funders and borrowers on development finance matters. She also regularly assists clients in managing their risk in the supply chain.

The move comes as Higgs & Sons completes the unification of its commercial and residential property teams by bringing them together under a single umbrella, creating one of the largest specialist teams in the region.

“Rachael has significant experience in working with a wide spectrum of property professionals across a range of sectors,” comments Cherry Elliott, Head of Property Services at Higgs & Sons.

“The newly unified practice group at Higgs offers expertise in all aspects of commercial and residential property. Rachael’s appointment has bolstered particularly the residential and commercial development offering we can now provide. Our development team can assist clients on all aspects of their deal throughout the lifecycle of the project. Providing advice across sectors including manufacturing, construction, retail, leisure and healthcare, Rachael will be a significant addition to our team.”

Highly experienced with regard to dispute resolution, Rachael will also support the work of Higgs Dispute Resolution and Litigation team. Having represented clients in heavy weight construction litigation, Rachael brings a wealth of specialist knowledge including delay and extension of time claims, disputes in relation to payment, quality of works or defects, and professional negligence claims. She has an extensive working knowledge of industry specific legislation (including the specific requirements in respect of payment) and the various forms of construction contract and is regularly engaged in acting for clients in adjudications.

“Rachael brings a great deal in terms of her contentious construction experience,” states Julia Lowe, Head of Dispute Resolution and Litigation. “Working collaboratively across teams enables us to offer a comprehensive service to our clients and Rachael’s appointment will enhance our ability to offer a holistic response in terms of contentious construction matters.”

Stourbridge based Rachael, is a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University having previously lectured at Aston University. She is also a past Chair of the Black Country Centre for Constructing Excellence.
