Higgs Senior Associate Jenny Tetlow explored clinical negligence and problems with hospital complaints procedures in an insightful podcast alongside a prominent consultant paediatrician.
Jenny, a clinical negligence expert, took part in the two-part series for the Royal College of Physicians discussing ‘Medico-Legal Issues in Healthcare’.
Also behind the mic was Alistair Thompson, Consultant Paediatrician and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
Jenny said: “It was a pleasure to be asked to appear on the podcast with Alistair to give an insight into how clinical negligence claims are dealt with from both a claimant and defendant perspective.
“Areas of discussion include why patients bring claims against medical professionals, current problems with complaints processes at hospitals, common issues giving rise to claims and why the medical experts instructed to assist with a claim are so important.”
Alongside his clinical practice and work with the Royal College of Physicians, Alistair acts as a medico-legal expert in cases concerning paediatric care.
This dual perspective allows Alistair to explain how legal claims are managed by hospitals, as well as the ways in which his medico-legal work has impacted his own clinical practice.
In a nod to the future, Jenny and Alistair consider the increasing demand for mediation as a means of resolving claims at an earlier stage and the associated benefits for both parties.
