New President For Birmingham Medico Legal Society

Ian Shovlin, has been appointed President of the Birmingham Medico Legal Society for 2011 - 2013.  Ian replaces Dr Robert Sunderland, Consultant Paediatrician in the role. Mr Richard Cherry, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, has being appointed Vice President.

Ian Shovlin, is Senior Partner at Higgs and Sons solicitors, Brierley Hill and Head of the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence Department. He said, "under Robert's leadership, the Society has gone from strength to strength with membership growing and excellent speakers being attracted.  I look forward to continuing Robert's good work to further develop BMLS.  I am honoured to be appointed President of such a prestigious organisation". 

Birmingham Medico Legal Society was established to promote medico-legal knowledge, improve education in the medico-legal field and develop contacts and co-operation between the professions of medicine and law.  With this in mind, a programme of lectures and social events is organised for members. The Society is part of the life of the Midlands professions of medicine and law and has forged links with other medico-legal societies, the Medical Defence Union, the Medical Protection Society and West Midlands NHS Trusts. 

The Society has approaching 200 members.  Meetings are held that last Monday of every month which include academic presentations by senior lawyers, doctors and forensic specialists on topics of mutual professional interest. All meetings qualify for CPD, CME and PGDA credits.

Membership of the Society is open to barristers, solicitors, accountants, registered medical and dental practitioners and to such other persons in the West Midlands area who are interested in medico-legal work.  For further information on joining the Society please see
