Charity legal specialist welcomes new gift aid scheme for smaller cash donations

19th March 2013

A lawyer who specialises in giving advice to charities and not for profit/social enterprise organisations says that a new Gift Aid Small Donations (GASD) scheme being launched later in the year is welcome news for charities and community amateur sports clubs in the region.

Kirsty McEwen, a lawyer at Higgs & Sons, has acted for many well-known and established charities as well as the Charity Commission. She says that the new GASD scheme will help some charities to claim a top-up payment on their small cash donations.

"Under the GASD scheme, it will be possible for some charities to claim a top-up payment on a total of £5,000 per year of small cash donations," explains Kirsty. "No individual donation must exceed £20 and donations must be in cash.

"The scheme is similar to the current gift aid scheme, but in this case, donors will not have to make a gift aid declaration because this scheme is government-funded, rather than linked to an individual taxpayer's relief.  The news will be particularly welcome for charities doing street collections or collecting cash donations from donors who don't provide their personal details."

Higgs & Sons work from two offices in the Black Country - Waterfront Business Park in Brierley Hill and Kingswinford. The firm employs over 200 people, which includes 100 specialist lawyers.
