West Midlands To Pilot New Immigration Checks on Tenants

17th September 2014

The Government have announced that as from December, the West Midlands region will trial the intended new laws that will fine landlords up to £3,000.00 if they let to people who are not lawfully in the UK.

The intended plan has been heavily criticised by landlords, but will require landlords to see evidence of a tenant's identity and citizenship, such as a passport or resident's permit, before they let to them. Copies of documents have to be kept for a year after the end of the tenancy.

If there is any doubt, landlords will be obliged to check with the home office, which can take up to two workings days.

Do you think the new laws will be effective? Do get in touch, as we would love to hear your views.
