A winning week for Higgs charity fundraisers

3rd July 2015

Staff at law firm Higgs & Sons were pitch perfect in their support for charity  this week after two  rather different events helped to raise almost £6000 for one good cause.

On 25th June, over 350 professionals from businesses across the region took part in Higgs' annual charity football tournament at Stourbridge Rugby club, whilst later that evening, the Higgs & Sons choir took part in Legal Harmony, a national singing competition held at Southwark Cathedral .

The six-a-side tournament  which featured 40 teams from across the region, raised over £3,800 for the firm's designated charity, The Alzheimer's Society.

"We were thrilled that so many teams from local businesses and professional organisations got involved once again this year," states partner, Richard Griffiths.

"With the appearance of three former Wolves players, this year's competition was even bigger and better than ever."

Ex-Wolves players Mel Eves, Dale Rudge and Jody Craddock turned out for Wolverhampton recruitment company, First4Staff in support of Breakthrough Breast Cancer.  The afternoon of competitive, but friendly football saw the team from Dains Accountants  take the overall title, with Bulleys Chartered Surveyors winning the Plate.

Later that same day 18 Higgs' staff travelled down to London to take part in the Legal Harmony national singing competition which saw the Higgs & Sons choir crowned winners. The singers themselves were not the only winners on the night however, as the choir also raised over £2000 for  the Alzheimer's Society.

"Singing at Legal Harmony was a great platform to raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society and to increase the profile of the organisation," comments partner Nyree Applegarth who along with solicitor Alice Hall, helped co-ordinate the choir's activities in the run up to the competition.

"The firm does so much to support charities throughout the region," comments partner Tim Jones, co-ordinator of the firm's highly successful Corporate Social Responsibility programme. "It is fantastic that these very different events raised so much money for our charity of the year, the Alzheimer's Society,

"Higgs & Sons' football tournament is already such a fantastic community event and a real highlight in the region's calendar thanks to the hard work of our staff, and now to have our choir recognised in this way really does reflect the talent and commitment of the entire Higgs' staff team. "

Ray Nash, Senior Regional Corporate Fundraising Executive at the Alzheimer's Society comments:  "It's fantastic that Higgs and Sons are supporting Alzheimer's Society as their charity of the year.

"Through our network of local services, we touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Every year, more than a million people make use of the information we provide.

"These two events were fantastic and a big thank you goes out to all those involved. We rely heavily on the support of companies like Higgs & Sons to continue our commitment to improving the lives of those affected by dementia.

"The money raised by Higgs & Sons will make a huge difference to the lives of people living with dementia today and fund research for a cure tomorrow."

Wolves' players Mel, Dale and Jody will also be part of the Wolves All Stars team who will be taking part in the firm's next big fundraising event.  The Higgs & Sons Family Fun Day on 20th September will see a Higgs Select XI take on the Wolves All Stars at Stourbridge FC. The day will play host to a range of activities including a bouncy castle, exotic animals face painting and crafts. As part of the fundraising, players will bid to secure a place in the Higgs team to line up against the Wolves legends.
