Access to loved ones will make a grandparents day

2nd October 2015

National Grandparents' day on the 3rd October is a reason to celebrate for many Grandparents up and down the country. The UK has more than 14 million grandparents, the majority of whom will be enjoying the company of their Grandchildren on this special day. However some will be left distraught having been estranged from their Grandchildren due to divorce or other family breakdowns.

Lynn Chesterman, Chief Executive of The Grandparents' Association comments: "Unfortunately when parents split up there are occasions when grandparents are also affected and are prevented from seeing their grandchildren. The results can be devastating for all those involved."

However for those affected by such problems, help is available. The Grandparents' Association hosts a local support group where grandparents can share personal stories about loss of contact and family conflict with others who have shared similar experiences. There are also legal options that those who have tried all other avenues, may want to consider.

"If a grandparent is concerned that they are being prevented from spending time with a grandchild, there are a number of options available," explains Hannah Nichols, a family solicitor at Midlands law firm, Higgs & Sons who undertakes voluntary work for the Grandparents' Association. "Grandparents play a vital role in a child's life and the Court's recognise this. Provisions such as a 'Child Arrangements Order' may sound daunting, but they could be something to consider where other routes have failed to help."

Meetings of the Grandparents' Association support group take place every last Thursday of the month, between 10.30am - 12.30pm at Kingswinford Community Centre, High Street, Kingswinford, DY6 8AP.  The group is free to anyone who would like to come along. Tea, coffee, cake and refreshments are available.
