Invaluable support to trustees provided at Higgs seminar

“A morning very well spent! I'm leaving inspired!” was just one of the many positive comments received from delegates following Higgs & Sons’ Charity & Not for profit team seminar held last month.

A Regulatory Update for Charity Trustees was the title of the seminar held to coincide with Trustees' Week in November when over 80 trustees and charity representatives attended the event at Higgs’ Waterfront Offices in Brierley Hill.

“Trustees' Week is an important date in the charity world calendar,” states Kirsty McEwen, Head of Higgs Charity and not for profit team. “As part of the support we offer to the region’s trustees we organise an event each year which provides those working in the sector an opportunity to network and update their learning on key topics from experts in their relevant fields.”

The topics discussed at this year’s event covered a range of pertinent areas including fundraising, how to develop a brand and the importance of the Annual Report in engaging with the public.

Kirsty herself started off the proceedings with a detailed overview of the Charity Governance Code which explained how to effectively embed the principles of the Charity Commission’s Code of Governance to enhance the effective running of an organisation.

Simon Atkins, Head of Not for Profit at Accountancy firm Cooper Parry spoke on how to use the Trustee’s Annual Report as an effective fundraising tool, whilst Robin Thomas, Chief Executive of Morgen Thomas Ltd, built on that theme when he spoke in detail about how to develop and monitor a successful fundraising strategy. Finally the importance of brand awareness was the theme of Ollie Leggett’s talk. Ollie is MD & Brand Consultant at IE Brand & IE Digital and referenced his experience working for charities including TeachFirst, the RAF Association and Christian Aid during his talk.

Kirsty continues: “There are over 1 million trustees volunteering their time in the UK. Their commitment and range of skills help to shape the role of the 196,000 charities that operate in this country.

“Each November Trustees' Week plays a vital role in helping to support the nation’s trustees. Our seminars focus on the issues and challenges that face the charitable sector and provide practical tips and guidance to support the running of a charity. The feedback we receive helps to identify what topics delegates want to see covered in future events so that we are continually providing a service that is relevant to the needs of those who contribute so much to this vital UK sector.”
