Cold Feet spotlights drama of contested wills

Experts at Higgs & Sons anticipate a potential rise in the number of contested wills following a story line in last week’s hugely popular ITV comedy drama Cold Feet.

The show saw lead character Jenny rowing with her sister Sheila over their late mother’s estate, and although the two resolved their differences, a Dispute Resolution solicitor at Higgs who specialises in matters concerning contested wills and estates has warned that that is not always the case.

Georgia Stott said: “Last week’s Cold Feet featured the story of two sisters who both cared for their mother at different stages of her life. The mother died having made a will eight years earlier – the will left her entire estate to just one of the siblings.

“Although the sisters managed to sort matters out amicably, unfortunately many families do not manage to resolve the situation themselves. Research carried out by Direct Line showed that, as of early 2019, more than 24% of people – that’s 12.6 million - would consider challenging the estate of a loved one and taking the matter to court.

“Here at Higgs, in line with a national trend, we are seeing an increase in the number of contested estates, and we would always advise anyone to seek legal advice at the earliest possible opportunity – whether you are looking to contest a will, or defend a claim.

“Unresolved conflict costs a lot more than just money and our dedicated team can provide expert advice and assistance with a view to resolving disputes in the most timely, proportionate and cost- effective manner. Disputes of any kind are difficult and a challenging time. Our experienced specialists will work alongside you to provide clear solutions to your problems.”
