Road Safety Week

16th November 2020

Road Safety Week

Today marks the start of the annual Road Safety Week, which runs until Sunday.

The theme for this year is “No Need to Speed” and the campaign is supported by the Department for Transport.

At Higgs & Sons, our lawyers work with many victims of road collisions and their families. We know only too well the devastation that accidents on the road can cause and so we are pleased to highlight the importance of the Road Safety Week initiative.

Road Safety Week… What is it?

Road Safety Week was founded by the charity Brake in 1997. The annual event aims to raise awareness about road safety and promotes steps that everyone can take to prevent deaths and injuries. It inspires schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety now and in the future.

Brake states that, unfortunately, someone is killed or seriously injured every 20 minutes on a British road. Every crash is preventable and each crash causes tragedy to an individual and their families. Road accidents are the leading cause of death for young people aged five to 29. Working together, we can all make a difference.

Earlier this year, COVID-19 took the world by surprise and we now live in a world that looks a lot different to how it did just months ago. When lockdown started, the amount of traffic on the road dropped massively. Unfortunately, this resulted in police forces across the country reporting huge numbers of drivers been stopped for excessive speeding and advising drivers on how speeding is a major cause of accidents.

During Road Safety Week, the police carry out roadside checks of vehicles. This highlights the dangers of poorly maintained vehicles and offering advice to drivers. As lockdown gripped the country most garages were temporarily closed with the government suspending MOTs and extending intervals between detailed inspections on larger commercial vehicles. This makes it more important to carry out regular checks of vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy.

We can all play our part to help make roads safer. Do your bit today - there really is ‘No Need to Speed!’

If you have been the victim of an RTC or for more advice or guidance please contact a member of the personal injury team on 0345 111 5050 or submit an online enquiry via the Higgs & Sons website.
