Trustees conference to provide glimpse into future for charities

Leading West Midlands legal firm Higgs & Sons hosts its annual Charity Update Conference on Wednesday, December 9.

A panel of experts will discuss current issues and challenges facing the charity and not-for-profit sector during the two-hour webinar, which begins at noon.

Places at the event can be booked by clicking here e-mailing events@higgsandsons.co.uk or ringing 0345 111 5050.

Kirsty McEwen, Partner and Head of Charity and Not-For-Profit at Higgs & Sons, said: “The annual charity conference is always one of the highlights of our calendar.

“While it’s disappointing we can’t welcome people along in person as normal, we are delighted to be offering the next best alternative through a webinar.

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for everyone in the sector and our aim is to help provide advice, guidance and tips for trustees on how they can move their organisation forward following these unparalleled challenges.

“We have expert speakers from a range of different fields offering key advice on topics including legal, finance, digital and security.”

During the conference, Kirsty will highlight the notable legal changes that have arisen from the pandemic including amendments to insolvency rules, best practice on governance and procedures and the role of the Charity Commission.

Other speakers will also take centre stage, including Reason Digital’s founder Matt Haworth who will speak on how charities and not-for-profit organisations can capitalise on opportunities in the digital world, including fundraising.

Simon Atkins - Partner and Head of Risk at Cooper Parry – will examine accounting, funding and financial control issues.

Finally, consultant John Clarke – from UK Retail, Gallagher - will explore the emerging cyber risks for organisations, particularly with employees and representatives increasingly working from home.

Kirsty added: “We have compiled a schedule which is relevant to the current climate and one we are confident will give trustees an insight into the way forward when the pandemic ends and hopefully answer many of their burning questions.

“All of the speakers are committed to playing their part in helping the charity and not-for-profit sector emerge from this crisis in the most sustainable position possible.”
