Mental Health Awareness week

Mental Health Awareness week

We are currently in the throes of Mental Health Awareness Week – and at Higgs & Sons we’ve been marking it by hosting a series of sessions to further educate and empower our people.

Mental health is very important to us as a firm – and, after the 14 months we have all just lived through, now more than ever.

We currently have a group of 14 Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) who have completed four days of specialist training and are there to help colleagues with any problems they may have. They work alongisde our Higgs Hubbs, which are regular informal catch-ups with colleagues across all practice areas.

This week the MHFAs co-ordinated a number of optional information sessions for our employees. The first saw Cathy Lawson talk about how connecting with nature can help people’s mental health, particularly as we emerge from lockdown.

The second talk focussed on Imposter Syndrome and recognising the self-doubt experienced by successful people.

Finally, we welcomed healthcare provider Aviva to lead a session on the support they can offer, including their mental health pathway and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

There is still a stigma around mental ill-health and some people may feel that they don’t want to speak to a supervisor or HR in case it appears as if they can’t cope. Having a network of MHFAs helps to address that problem.

Working in the law can be highly pressurised so it’s pleasing to see the legal sector starting to be more proactive in addressing mental ill-health concerns. We’re proud to be stepping up and taking positive steps towards a healthier workforce.
